Sports massage is a type of massage used to manipulate the soft tissue structures of the body, which benefits individuals who are involved in sports and other types of physical activity.
Soft tissue is connective tissue such as skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. These structures can be subject to trauma, imbalances and repetitive strain. The application of Sports massage allows these structures to become more pliable, which can result in reducing tension, aid in recovery and enhance performance.
Physiological benefits of a sports massage
Other than the application of our hands to provide a sports massage, devices such as a massage gun can also be used.
At Ascension Sports Therapy we use the Theragun. The Theragun is a handheld, professional-grade percussive therapy device that aims to alleviate pain and improve range of motion. It uses a variety of attachments to provide a deep massage to muscles in the body. The device offers up to 60 lbs of concentrated force to muscles at a deep level, and repeatedly comes on and off the body at a rate of 40 times per second. This also provides a range of neurological and physiological benefits.
What is Percussive Therapy?
Percussive therapy incorporates the use of a power tool, similar to a drill, to massage muscles providing repetitive, deep amplitudes of vibration and percussion. At Ascension Sports Therapy, we incorporate percussive therapy in many of our treatments when deemed an appropriate method for reducing pain and relieving muscle tension.
